Access, in five reasons
Getting to the pharmacy is not a given for everyone. Five reasons to rethink access, including an explicit recommendation from the European health authorities.
- Chronic patients. 29.2% of people aged 65 and over take at least five medicines a day; polypharmacy, and therefore the frequency of pharmacy visits, increases with age.
- The risk of contamination. The ECDC, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, put it in writing: “Home delivery of medicines should be considered to reduce the number of patients visiting the pharmacy.”
- The home / care-facility inequity. In care facilities, dispensing without travel is already in the law (sealed packet, art. 3). At home, no equivalent channel exists.
- Dependency. Around 10,530 dependent people are cared for at home in 2025 (CNS estimate).
- Discretion. Some treatments expose the patient to the eyes of others: the sealed parcel protects their privacy until handover.
